Radish poriyal

I was quite surprised when I saw this recipe. When I gave a try it was really tasty. Other than boring radish sambar and rafishparatha I felt that this was quite interesting and easy to make. The taste of this poriyal was similar to chow chow poriyal.

Ingredients:

  • Radish -3 to 4 medium size ( approximately 400 to 500 gms)
  • Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
  • Onion -1
  • Salt- To taste

To dry roast and grind:

  • Urad dhal - 2 tbsp
  • Red chilli - 2 to 4 nos

To temper:

  • Oil -2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds -1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Asafoetida- A pinch

Method:

  • Peel the outer skin of radish and cut it into small cubes.
  • In a pan temper with items mentioned under 'to temper'. Add chopped onion and saute till onion turns transparent.
  • Add chopped radish followed by Turmeric  powder, salt and 1/4 cup water.
  • Cook it covered.
  • Now dry roast Urad dhal and red chilli and make it into a coarse powder.
  • When the vegetable is done add 1 &1/2 tsp of this powder. Mix well.
  • Serve.

Notes:

  •  Chopping the radish finely makes it to cook faster.
  • Store the extra Urad dhal powder in a  air tight container.
  • This powder can be used of any other types of poriyal also.
  • Add less water as radish by itself has lot of water content.
  • Adjust the powder quantity according to the quantity of radish you use.
