Gooseberry rice / nellikai sadham


Serves -3

Ingredients: 


  • Gooseberry - 5 nos 
  • Curry leaves - A spring
  • Green chilli- 2 to3
  • Lemon juice - from half a lemon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp ( optional)
  • Coriander leaves- for garnish
  • Cooked rice - 2 cups
  • Salt - to taste

To temper:


  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dhal - 1 tsp
  • Channa dual- 1 tsp
  • Ground nuts - 1 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts ( optional) - 4 to 5
  • Asafoetida - A generous pinch


Method:

  • First grate the gooseberry and keep ready.
  • Now in a pan temper with items mentioned under ' to temper'.
  • Add grated gooseberry and cook well.
  • Add green chilli, curry leaves.
  • Add turmeric powder if you prefer yellow colour for gooseberry rice.
  • Finally add salt, coriander leaves and lemon juice.
  • Add cooked rice and mix well. Serve.






Notes:

  • Lemon juice is a must for this rice. It enhances the taste.
