Manathakkali Kai Kuzhambu ( black night shade berry)



Serves-2

Ingredients:

  • Manathakkali/ black night shade berries- 1/4 cup
  • Onion-1
  • Tomato-1&1/2
  • Garlic-3 to 4 cloves( optional)
  • Tamarind- 2 tsp packed
  • Kuzhambu powder/ curry masala powder-1&1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1/8 tsp
  • Jaggery-1/4 tsp ( optional)
  • Salt - to taste

To temper:

  • Sesame oil-1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds-1/4 tsp
  • Urad dhal-1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds-1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves- few
  • Asafoetida-a pinch

Method:

  • Remove the unripe berries fro. It's stem( this is quite time consuming😅)
  • Wash well.
  • In a pan temper with items mentioned under'to temper'.
  • Add finely chopped onion,when it becomes soft add the berries and cook for 3 to 4 mins. Then add tomato, When tomato turns mushy add turmeric powder,salt,curry masala( Kuzhambu powder). Mix well and cook for few mins.
  • Add the tamarind extract and required water.
  • Close the lid and cook for 7 to 8 mos in a low flame.
  • Finally add little jaggery and turn off the flame.
  • Serve hot with rice.







Notes:

  • Berries should be cooked well to avoid bitterness.
