Agathikeerai poriyal ( August tree leaves)



Agathikeerai/ August tree leaves/ humming bird tree leaves😂🤣 name is so funny,isn't it?... Though they are quite bitter they have lot of health benefits like,

It is an antidote for poisons
It is cooling
It is good for fever
It is a laxative
It helps in digestion
It is a tonic
It cures insanity
It is a very satvic food
folk medicine
It is usually consumed on dvadasi day( the day after ekadasi).
Consuming it once in a while is good for health.
This is not advised during medication, since it will reduce the power of medicine.

Ingredients:

  • Agathi keerai- a bunch
  • Cococunt gratings-1/2 cup
  • Moong dhal- 2 tbsp
  • Sugar- few pinches
  • Salt - to taste

To temper:

  • Oil- 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds-1/4 tsp
  • Urad dhal-1/4 tsp
  • Red chilli-2 nos
  • asafoetida-a generous pinch.

Method:

  • Remove the leaves alone and wash them.
  • Pressure cooker moong dhal and keep aside.
  • In a pan add oil followed by all the tempering.
  • Then add the leaves, little water and let it cook in a low flame covered for about 10 mins.
  • Once the leaves are completely cooked add cooked moong dhal, salt, coconut gratings.
  • Mix well and serve.
