Raw banana poriyal


My cousin wanted me to make a vazhakkai/ raw banana curry/ poriyal which his frnd use to bring during school days. So he called his friends' s mom and asked for the recipe. I tried it and came out tasty. So from then on I used to follow this recipe for making raw banana poriyal.This recipe is same as the one made with Seppankinzhagu/ arbi.
 Serves -2

Ingredients:

  • Raw banana/ vazhakkai-1 
  • Red chilli powder -1 tsp
  • Coriander powder-1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • Shallots/ sambar Vengayam-7 nos
  • Garlic 2 cloves
  • Salt - To taste 

To temper:

  • Oil -2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dhal -1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - few 
  • Asafoetida- A pinch

Method :

  • Peel the skin of raw banana and cut it into roundels. Soak them I  water to avoid dis coloration.
  • Crush onion and garlic with mortar and pestlet. 
  • Strain them from water and marinate with spicy powders along with salt. Ensure to coat them well.
  • In a pan add oil and temper with items mentioned above.
  • Then add crushed onion and garlic saute for few seconds and then add the marinated vegetable.
  • Cook closed in a medium flame.
  • It will approximately take 10 to 13 mins for raw banana to get cooked.
  • So stir in between to ensure even cooking. 
  • Serve






Notes :

If you don't have mortar and pestle just give one pulse in mixie.
Add more oil if necessary.
