Kovakai / tindora kootu



Serves -3

Ingredients:

  • Kovakai - 1&1/2 cup ( chopped lengthwise)
  • Moong dhal- 1/2 cup
  • Onion -1
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tsp
  • Salt - To taste 

To grind :

  • Coconut grated -1/2 cup
  • Cumin -1 tsp
  • Red chilli- 4 to 5

To temper :

  • Oil -2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida/ L.G. - A generous pinch 
  • Curry leaves- Few

Method :

  • Pressure cook moong dhal  and kovakai separately.
  • In a pan add oil and temper with items mentioned under ' to temper '. Add finely chopped onion and saute till onion turns transparent.
  • Then add cooked kovakai /tindora and moong dhal and water as required.
  • Mix well and add salt.
  • Grind items given under ' to grind' without adding water.
  • Add this coconut mixture to the kootu.
  • Mix well. Let it boil for a minute add coriander leaves and turn off the flame. 
  • Serve with hot rice.





Notes :

  • You can replace red chilli with green chilli.
  • But I feel the colour which red chilli gives is quite eye appealing
