Ven pongal

For many pongal is favouritre dish but I hate pongal and whenever my mom prepares pongal she will make a separate dish for me . When I got married I came to know that my husband is hardcore fan of venpongal.I used to prepare for him and I also used to have it.In this way I started eating pongal.I specially love pongal which is been given as prasadam in temple. It has a divine taste.So this is the story of pongal getting into my life.:)

Ingredients:

  • Moong dhal -3/4 cup
  • Rice -3/4 cup
  • Water -4&1/2 cups
  • Salt - To taste

To temper:

  • Ghee -3 tbsp
  • Cumin/jeera -1 tsp
  • Ginger -1 inch piece(finely chopped)
  • Black pepper -1 tsp
  • Cashewnuts -6-7 nos
  • Asafoetida -1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves -1 spring

Method:

  • Pressure cook moong dhal and rice for 5 whistles.
  • Mash it by adding salt.
  • Temper it with items given under'to temper'.(Crush the pepper before adding).
  • Serve hot with coconut chutney/sambar.







Notes:

  • If you want you can add half ghee and half dalda but not advisable for health.
  • Some times I add pepper powder and ginger puree to avoid people removing those items from pongal.
